When Jack Nicklaus used a MacGregor Response MI 615 putter stamped "DC Long" on the sole to win the 1986 Masters, Response putters took off!  Over 270,000 Response putters were sold by the end of 1987 when combining the 4 different models.  According to DC "Clay" Long, the club designer who created the line, only the first 600 Response putters (which would be roughly 150 putters of each model) were stamped with his name.  All of these were sold or given away by the end of January of 1986.

The putter offered here is the MI 540. According to Long, the MI 540 was made in the style of the PING Pal putter used by Tom Watson with great success for much of his career.

Another interesting fact about this club is it uses a screw sunk through the brass cover over each of the lead weights on the sole.  Only a small number of  the 600 "DC Long"-stamped Response putters were made with screws sunk through the brass covers on the sole. Nicklaus's winning DC long Response also had screws sunk through the brass plate covering the lead on his putter.

This putter measures 35 inches in length.   The shaft and grip are original, although the grip has started to dry out some and has cracked in a few places.  The head is in outstanding condition.  This putter is a great companion piece to the DC Long Response MI 615 offered in the prior lot.
