This small wooden head putter with a darkened brass face insert and sole plate is marked "Ray de Haven, Balanced" on the top of the head. Fred X. Fry, the Golfather of American club collectors, acquired this club in 1935 directly from de Haven. The club has its original grip and original shaft, both of which bear Fred X. Fry inventory labels.

According to Fry's inventory page for this club, Ray de Haven, a pro at Presidio Golf Club of San Francisco and then at Lincoln Park, used this putter for many years.  "When Ray got it in 1920 it was an old putter then."  This tells us that Ray stamped his own name on the club even though he did not make it.  Interestingly, Fry wrote that this putter was copied to make the two aluminum putters offered in the next lot.
