Francis Fairlie received a British patent in 1891 for an anti-shank iron. This particular Fairlie's niblick apears to be an early example. It has a smooth face and smallish head. The back of the head is stamped "Fairlie's Patent Niblick". The shaft is original, the grip is a period replacement and matches up well.
