Patented in 1908 by Robert Edward Wemyss, this club is one of the earliest muscle back putters are well as heel and toe weight putters a collector could ever hope to acquire. According to his patent which illustrated only a wooden head, the lead weights are to be placed in the head in line with the shaft and directly behind the ball. On this club, however, the two lead weights are in line with the shaft well enough, but they are spread apart, to the toe and heel side of the blade.

I do not believe that Wemyss understood "moment of intertia," how increasing the weight at the heel and toe can stabilize a putter head, but he none-the-less beat the rush to explore that concept by half a century.

This club bears the "Andreson & Blyth, St. Andrews" cleekmark inside an oval along with "Wemyss Patent 16070 Iron" and "Special" and "Warranted Hand Forged"

The 34 1/2" shaft and sueded leather grip appear to be original.  A sweet club, indeed.
