In 1928, this "Golf Sickle" was advertised as able to provide "great
exercise cutting grass or weeds. Swings like a golf club."
The top of the hosel is stamped "Reg'd Design No. 689194 /
Holtzapffel & Co." The British registered design was issued on
March 25, 1922, to Holtzapffel & Company, 53 Haymarket, St. James,
London.
This was no ordinary weed cutter. Given the sharp double-edge blade
at the end of the steel hosel, any unfortunate sole in charge of
chopping off a few weeds could practice his or her swing while "hard at
work." Artistically designed to approximate a golf grip, the wood along
the top twelve inches of the shaft is not only ribbed but also slightly
larger in diameter than the rest of the shaft. The butt end of the
35" shaft has its original brass and steel cap. A beautiful perimeter piece
that's out of the ordinary.
