If you've heard of Bobby Jones, you know J Victor East. East, truly a master clubmaker, was a lead engineer and the head of "Mechanics and Design" at Spalding. He is heavily featured in Sidney Matthew's book, "The History of Bobby Jones' Clubs" as East not only helped Jones turn feedback and ideas into legitimate products and success on the course, but his "proclivity for engineering perfection" also allowed him to perfectly duplicate many of Jones' famous clubs. In fact, when duplicating one of Jone's drivers, East went through 5,000 pieces of hickory before he narrowed his choices down to 4 shafts, even listening to them with a stethoscope to determine the identical choice.

According to Matthew, "Those who knew J. Victor East have described his detailed work habits. East was extremely discipline and earnestly sought the precision reflective of a master of his trade."

In the collection of clubs that Bobby Jones used to win the Grand Slam was a spoon made by J. Victor East and marked with his name. That club is one of the two Jones "Grand Slam" clubs displayed at Augusta National.

All three woods in the set offered here are stamped "J. Victor East" on the top of the head and "1000 Pat'd Apr 24-1923" on the metal-plated sole. Each of the shafts have a nearly 5-inch-long black hosel collar.  The shafts, grips, and shaft collars are original. Underneath each metal sole plate is a black fiber slip, and both the edge of the soleplate and slip are visible across the leading edge.

The clubs themselves are original top to bottom.  They show clear evidence of bag wear, smallish dings and dents from clanking against other clubs. When viewing the face, it is easy to see that these clubs were used very little.

These clubs appear to have been made as a set when viewing all the cosmetics and components of the clubs.  Their wear marks testify that they have been together their entire existence.  They were obviously custom made, however, as their lengths are not normal for a 1-2-3 set.

The #1 (driver) is 40 1/4" long with a light crosshatch scoring on the face which remains almost as clean as the day it was made.  The 2 wood is 40 1/4" long and also has a lightly crosshatched face. The 3 wood is 41" long with a horizontal line scoring along the face.

Jones used a spoon made by J Victor East to help him win the Grand Slam.  Now is your chance to own not one but a set of three J Victor East clubs.
