This backspin iron has corrugated grooves and a slight gooseneck (offset) built into the neck, something that is not commonly seen in an antique iron club. Off-set helps the golfer draw the ball and clubmakers today often employ offset in many of their iron designs.

Another engineering feature of this club is the hosel connects to the end of the head midway between the sole and topline.  Typically the hosel runs to the sole.

This iron was made sometime in the early 1920s by George Nicoll of Leven, Scotland. Nichol started his club-making business in 1881 and used slight variations of an upturned hand for his mark across his entire career. The back of this iron bears that cleekmark, along with his name and location. It is also stamped "Warranted / Handforged" and "Zenith / Pitcher."

Around the turn of the century, George's son stepped up in the family business and helped model it after other leading club manufacturers like Spalding--producing complete lines of irons of which Zenith was one of the most popular.

Original 37 1/2" shaft. Original grip.

There is some oxidation down in the bottom of the grooves on the face, otherwise the club is as shown in the images.

This club is at the bottom in the group picture.
