Ben Sayers of North Berwick was a fine player who competed in every Open championship between 1880 and 1923. He started out as a ballmaker in the early 1880s and then went on to established himself as a respected clubmaker. The club offered here was made by him and attests to his eye as a clubmaking artisan. The shape of this head is attractive on many levels.

The head on this c. 1900 putter measures 5 1/8" in length, 1 5/8" in width, and 1" in face depth. The 34 3/4" shaft is original as is the brushed leather grip.

The original varnish/finish on this long-nose style putter has been removed and the head cleaned up. As a result the "B. Sayers" clubmaker's name stamp is hard to see—but it is still there and can be made out as shown in one image. The club looks great and now has an attractive finish with a nice sheen.

The backweight has been filed across the middle where a prior owner removed some of the lead, and there are also several lead "buttons" in the sole. The horn, which appears to be original to the club, has an unusual asymmetrical shape.

Around 1910, Sayers began to make clubs on a larger scale when his son Ben Junior moved to North Berwick and joined him in the clubmaking business.

Overall this is a handsome club with elegant, clean lines.
