Stamped "Auchterlonie" on the top of its head, representing the company founded in 1896 by brothers David & Willie Auchterlonie, this bulger driver features an authentic bulger face--where instead of being flat, the face indeed is slightly bulged out. Such a face, convex heel to toe, was the opposite of how many long nose clubs were made, with their concave faces heel to toe.

The bulge to the face proved to be a gigantic innovation in the golf world that remains to this day.  The slight heel- -to-toe radius helps the golfer to hit straighter shots. It creates a gear action for those balls struck on the toe or heel that helps the ball to course correct more than if the face were straight.  Plus the bulgde will drive deeper into the back of the ball and thereby compress the ball more than a flat face. (As an extreme example, imagine how a pointed nail affixed to the sweetspot of a driver face can be driven deep into the back of a rubber core ball, so the "dull point" of a radiused face is better at compressing the back of the ball than a flat face.)

Affixed in splice neck fashion, the shaft measures 39 1/2"  and is stamped "Auchterlonie / St Andrews" near the grip. It has been neatly re-gripped with a wonderful period style sheepskin grip.

While the Auchterlonies acquired their iron heads from Tom Stewart or Robert Condie, their wood heads were hand made in their own shop.

This club has its original finish, neck whipping, and shaft. It remains in excellent condition.
