In 1910, in conjunction with the Open Championship held in St. Andrews, a golf exhibition was held. Sixty exhibitors, many of which were clubmakers, featured their wares. Within the clubmaking realm those adjudicated to have entered the best three clubs of their class (drivers, brassies, spoons, and iron heads) received either a gold, silver or bronze medal. A D&W Auchterlonie putter won the gold medal for putters. This followed on the heels of D&W winning three gold medals the prior year at Deal, the first year such an exhibition was held.

This c. 1910 long nose style putter offered here is believed to be a copy of a gold-medal-winning Auchterlonie putter. The top of the head is even stamped "Auchterlonie Gold Medal, Handmade" with a gold finish in the lettering. When clubmakers won a gold medal at one of these exhibitions, they typically advertised that fact and sometimes included that accomplishment on the clubs that achieved it.

David and Willie Aucthterlonie were fine clubmakers and have a rich history in the game.

Having apprenticed to Robert Forgan, David Auchterlonie & his brother Willie joined forces to create the firm of D&W Auchterlonie in 1896. Although they started out with just the two of them, it took only a few years to build up to a team of 16 workmen. They patented several clubs, made their woods by hand, and shipped many clubs to American retailers.  They did beautiful work.

The 35 3/4" splice-neck shaft is stamped "Auchterlonie / St. Andrews" and has been nicely re-gripped, in period style. The head is solid, the finish and neck whipping are original.  Overall, a real winner!
