Covered under both a US and British patent issued to Cuthbert Butchart in 1926, this 7-piece shaft is made with a hickory core enclosed by lengthwise strips of greenheart (the dark stripes) and bamboo (the light stripes). The cross section of this construction is visible on the butt end of the shaft, as shown in one of the images accompanying this lot.

According to his patent, Cuthbert's compound shaft could "be made more slender than the ordinary shaft of a golf stick and that consequently it will be subjected to less wind resistance than a shaft of larger cross sectional dimensions."

Produced and sold by the Butchart Nichols Company, these light/dark striped shafts are among the most attractive ever devised.

This 10-iron, which serves as a chipper, is in wonderful original condition, including the leather wrapped grip.  The stainless steel head is stamped "10, BTN Butchart Nichols Co, Stainless."

For much more on these shafts and Cuthbert Butchart, see TCA2 v2 p646.
