Willie Wilson entered the clubmaking trade in St. Andrews during the 1860s.  This iron, made by him, is made out of gunmetal and dates to the late 1880s-early 1890s.  Gunmetal was used because it did not rust, offered an attractive look, and it provided a slightly different feel.

The back of the blade is marked "W. Wilson / Maker / St. Andrews."

Midway up the original shaft is a small, inconsequential chip.  The grip is the original sheepskin with replaced whipping and is in beautiful condition. There is a slight bow to the shaft, and the blade is slightly bent near the hosel.  When addressing the ball, the blade looks fine, but the loft has been reduced slightly.  Gunmetal irons from this period are actually quite rare.  A very nice piece!
