The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., was formed in 1882 but it was not until 1893 before its golf course was built.  In 1894, The Country Club was one of five charter clubs that founded the United States Golf Association.  Ouimet won the 1913 US Open at The Country Club. This was the third national championship hosted there.

When Ouimet was three years old, this silver-plated loving cup was engraved and given as 1st Prize at The Country Club's May 9, 1896 Men's Twosomes Golf Tournament.  The cup was won by E.V. Motley and P.V.R. Ely.  All of this information is beautifully engraved on the front of this trophy.  The silver plate has worn off in places, but the trophy still looks nice, measuring approximately 5 1/4" tall by 6 3/4 inches across from handle edge to handle edge.

A person would be hard pressed to obtain an older American golf trophy than this one—and from such a historical club as well. Indeed, The Country Club has been the site of a great deal of golf history—14 major championships and one Ryder Cup to be exact—and this trophy predates all of those events.
