Despite measuring barely over an inch tall, this medal does not lack for detail! Made of brass, this small medal features ornate banners, patterns, thistles, a crown and a lion and the words "F.G. Tait Amateur Champion 1896 & 98." This piece honors Frederick Guthrie Tait, who won the British Amateur Championship in 1896 & 1898 (among 26 other tournament victories during his career) before being tragically killed two years later on military assignment in South Africa. Known as "Scotland's Soldier Golfer," he grew up on the course of St. Andrews where Old Tom Morris liked to watch him play.

Fittingly, the middle of the piece contains an image of Saint Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland. It is encircled by the words "Nemo Me Impune Lacesset," which translates into "no one attacks me with impunity" and is also the national motto of the kingdom of Scotland.

The auctioneer is not familiar with this medal, having never seen one before.  Whether it was used as a medal for a competition or some type of memorial medal, this item captures a sweet memory of a Scottish golf history.
