Byron Nelson clubs offered by MacGregor were primarily sold as secondary lines.  Their prices were not as expensive as their pro-line offerings.  Consequently, all the various secondary line Byron Nelson clubs were not stamped "Tourney".  The Nelson blade putter head offered here, however was offered as a pro-line club but for only 2 years as shown in MacGregor's 1949 & 1950 catalogs. This Nelson blade putter sold for the same price as the Tommy Armour Ironmaster putters also offered in those catalogs.

The Tommy Armour putter also offered int his lot was also sold by MacGregor in the early 1950s. While it has a goose neck, and is listed in MacGregors catalog as an IMG model, it was not marked IMG on the sole. That occured on later Armour gooseneck putters.

Both clubheadss appear just as they did the day they were made. With one exception.  There is a wood dowel that has been broken off inside the hosel of the Tommy Armour putter.  The auctioneer has no club why the wood is there but feels confident that it could be easily removed. Wooden dowel aside, such mint condition Macgregor clubheads are extremely scarce, which is part of what makes these two putter heads so special.  One does nto need to shaft them to appreciate their place in history.

The consignor, who is not a golfer, inherited these club heads from his father who worked at MacGregor during the 1950s and 60s.  The father certainly was in the right place at the right time to have a chance to acquire such a set.
