"H Luff" is stamped in script on the top of this c. 1890 head.  The greenhart shaft and sheepskin grip appear original. The neck whipping has been replaced but matches well.   The club appears to date to the end of the long nose era, c. 1890, as, compared to clubs made in the 1880s and earlier, many elements of the club are refined and the head is slightly smaller in its proportions.

In addition to Hugh Philp, who stamped his name in script on just a few of his clubs, Robert Davidson, Tom Hood, and a clubmaker only identified as “Bruce” are the only other long-nose clubmakers known to have stamped their names in script.  This is the only example of a Luff long nose club the auctioneer has seen or heard of.

This is a beautiful, graceful putter in great condition.  If you like collecting  clubs made by long nose clubmakers whose work is seldom if ever seen, this club fits the bill.
