Spalding originally released this Gold Medal driver as patented by Charles Jacobus. It featured three pieces of mahogany wood inserted into the face and according to its 1913 publication in "Golf," these wood inserts were "placed so that the ball is hit with the grain of the wood. The theory of this club is that it gives the hardest possible striking surface and hence gives the greatest possible distance." Furthermore, the center dowel is not drilled as deep as the two side dowels, so that the center dowel will rest on the “shoulders” of the side dowels.

The top of the clubhead is marked with the "Spalding Gold Medal" inside of an oval with the letter "J" added inside for Charles Jacobus. It also has the letter "R" stamped underneath it, for the patented improvements made by Frederick Rigden. Rigden added a brass backweight centered behind the ball, both vertically and horizontally, which is featured on this club. Rigden's design was the first brass backweight to be patented.

Original shaft measures approximately 43", with original leather wrapped grip.
