The small Netherlands town of Delft received great notoriety in the late 1600's as it found itself at the center of the Dutch "Golden Age." Inspired by the beautiful blue and white porcelain pieces created by the advanced techniques of Chinese artists, the Dutch artists found a way to tin-glaze earthenware to create the same, beautiful glossy white surface, which they then would decorate with unique designs, trademarks, and scenes of Dutch life.

The popularity of these "Delft Tiles" spread through private homes and grand estates as a key piece of beautiful and functional decor. Eventually the handmade tiles from Delft were replaced with a cheaper, more durable version made in Britain. These three hand-painted Dutch tiles feature the game of "Colf" are are the real deal, not a remake.

Each tile measures just a touch over 5" x 5". One of the tiles has small piece broken off the corner but it remains and could be discretely repaired.  An inventory label remains on the back of one of the tiles.

The ball and c.1700 child's colf clubhead shown in two of the images are not part of this lot.
