Marked "St. Andrews" in a large, bold stamp on the crown, the shaft of this left-handed club is stamped "John Wisden & Co, 21 Cranbourne Str, London, WC." Wisden, one of London's foremost sports outfitters, began selling golf clubs and other golf requisites in London no later than 1874. This club would have been made in the 1880s for Wisden to retail directly to the public, hence the actual maker's name is not on the crown. Even so, this club is well made and remains in great shape!

The club shows little use.  The only notable wear to speak of is a small area along the back edge of the top of the head, where a little of its original varnish has worn off.  The 41" shaft is original as is the grip, although the grip has been wrapped with a reddish-coated tape of some kind in years past. Some of the red has come off leaving a clear tape underneath. An old yellowed collection label taped to the grip identifies the club as being over 100 years old.

The head measures 5 1/4" in length, and has a 1 1/4" face depth and remains in outstanding condition.

To the auctioneer, nothing says St. Andrews like this old club!
