A 1906 Golf Illustrated advertisment for the Dovetail Socket Driver states, "The invention of 1906, New method of splicing wooden clubs. Wallis & Fulford's Patent." The ad goes on to describe the qualties of the club as follows: "This is an entirely new style of splicing for drivers and brassies. Rigid at the neck and practically unbreakble at the point where most breakages occur. The total absence of "twist" conduces to longer and straighter driving."

Stamped "Wallis & Fulford, Bradford & Brough, Patent" on the top of its head, this 42" driver with its original grip is in great condition. the only structural blemish is a hairline crack on the heel of the face. The rest of the head and the dovetailed socket/splice is in perfect condition.  The whipping that was on the top half of the splice is no longer there—and no need to replace it, as the joint is now on full display.

It would have been a lot more work to build this neck joint as opposed to simply sticking a tapered shaft into a socket. Alas, Dovetail Socket woods never really caught on, so all the extra work soon came to an end.

A very cool club!
