This Aucterlonie putter, stamped "Auchterlonie, Glenview club, Golf, Ill" in an oval has its weight located higher up on the back of the blade as opposed to lower down, near the sole.  It was designed to impart topspin to the ball when struck, so the ball would be more inclined to dive into the hole at the first opportunity—at least that was the thinking behind such a design.

The  bottom of the back of the head is stamped with owners initials and the word "Professional".  The underside of the protrusion on the back of the head is stamped "1909 * 425." 1909 would be the year this club was made and 425 was possibly a British patent number.  Prior to 1913, British patent number repeated, beginning with the number "1."    Auchterlonie is a St. Andrews name, which is likely where this putter originated before being shafted/sold in Illinois.  (It should be noted that a patent application was assigned its patent number upon submission. However, not all patents were completed and issued for various reasons. This would explain why the auctioneer was unable to find any record of patent number 425 issued in 1909.)

This Aucterlonie overspin putter measures 34" in length.  Both shaft and grip are original and the club overall is in excellent condition.
