Born in Musselburgh 1857, Peter Paxton spent his working life in the club and ball making business.  He became well known as both during the 1890s, running a large operation with a healthy advertising budget.  The remaining clubs he made during the 1880s, however, are few and far between.

The c. 1880s Paxton play club offered here is one such club. Its original shaft measures a full 45" in length and has its original sheepskin grip.  The head measures 5 3/8" in length, 1 7/8" in width, and 1" in face depth.  Clubs made in the 1880s typically had a much deeper face, but this one retains the shallow face that helped make featherball era woods so attractive.  In like fashion, its face has a slight curve/hook from heel to toe. The Paxton name is prominent, and the club stands as a fine example of Paxton's early work.

This club is the 3rd club from the left in the accompanying group image.
