Chemico Deluxe balls with horseshoe, dots and circle stamps were made in 1913. Few remain. This example was little used and shows but little wear to its surface.  It is no longer in its original paint, but has been attractively restored/cleaned up, with paint left only in the recessed pattern and not on the outer surface of the cover. The reason this ball is so dark is because the cover is made primarily out of gutta percha.

The individual who did this restoration could have easily just repainted the ball white after removing any old paint, as golf balls made back in the day were sometimes repainted by their owners. This ball would then present in keeping with the era from which it originated except it would be newer paint.  The current presentation, however, provides heightened visuals, likely retains the original paint in the pattern marks, the edges of which are crisp, not rounded over and partially filled by a new coat of paint. Furthermore, nothing is hidden as sometimes occurs under new paint. While original paint is best, the fact that this ball is not completely repainted allows it to display the original nature of its unpainted cover and what is likely the original paint in its pattern.

This ball is bottom row, middle in the accompanying group image.
