As described in the September 7 1899 issue of Golfing, "J. Winton, of Montrose, makes a first rate club. The experience of years has brought this well-known club-maker's work to a high state of perfection, and as his business is both wholesale and retail, shippers would do well to write for a price list."

Made by James Winton in Montrose, Scotland, this late 1880s putter is stamped "J. Winton" and measures 5" long and 2" wide, with a face depth of 1 3/16". The original 36 3/4" shaft has its original leather wrapped grip. For a long-nosed putter, this has a rather upright lie.  The topline of the face shows wear across its entire length, but there is still much that is really good about this club.  Born in 1835, Winton eventually became a promient clubmaker with a successful business.
