Despite the fact that it is not marked, this left-handed Bussey brassey has a fork splice covered under the October 23, 1890 British patent issued to William Bussey and Joseph Pinder. Instead of a traditional splice neck, the shaft on this club forks at the bottom and fits over the top of the neck.  The neck is tapered on its leading and following sides to fit the shaft. Glue and whipping secure the splice.

Another evidence that this club was made by George G. Bussey & Co is the shaft is fitted with Bussy and Pinder's sewn leather grip also covered under the same 1890 patent. This leather grip was made by placing a piece of leather over the handle and sewing it shut, with its seam running in a straight line up the back of the grip.

The back of the head has three lead buttons spaced around its perimieter, another feature of early Bussey woods.

Measuring oniy 38" in length, and this is the original length, this club was made for a junior golfer. All things considered, it's a great club—one of the earliest to expand the clubmaking envelope and try completely new ideas.
