Produced in 1898 by Anderson, Anderson & Anderson (located at St. Paul's Cathedral, Churchyard, London), this Varsity B gutty ball has the 6 pole pattern unique to the Varsity and Varsity B golf balls. The ball shows only light use. The original paint has darkened with time. 

The February 18, 1898 issue of Golf reports how Anderson had been developing a new white paint for use on their golf balls: "They sent us sample balls...coated with the new white paint, which has only been selected after rigid experiment and trial.  After testing the balls on hard as well as soft greens, in frosty as well as open weather, we find the paint free from the slightest tendency to chip.  The balls are coated light enough to leave the nicking clear cut and free from clogging, thereby ensuring the undiminished power of carry, and obviating the tendency to 'duck,' which is often seen in balls which are coated with paint too heavily.  The paint is also glossy and white." 

It would appear that the new white paint might have been a bit prone to shifiting after being exposed to light for 125 years.  Apparently they did not test for that!

This ball remains in outstanding condition. The names are strong as are all the pole patterns. An example of this ball is in the Harry B. Wood collection—#67
