This figural metal sculpture portrays a rolly polly early golfer in period gear, including high-waisted knickers, scally cap and pipe clenched in his grinning mouth. A golf ball sits at his feet, he carries a large golf bag - where the matches go - and his left hand forms a ring to rest the pipe stem in. Bottom front of the base identifies him as "Peter Putter" - the only other mark is "Pat. Apl'd For" on the back - no maker's marks. Classified ads placed by the Acorn Metal Works in Bloomfield, NJ in 1924-1925 issues of Popular Mechanics identify this piece: "Make $8 to $100 extra weekly selling new unique metal pipe rack and bookend 'Peter Putter'. Amazingly big seller in in gift, variety and drug stores. Get Full Details".  7 1/2 inches tall.
