This club has a unique head shape not found on any others known to the auctioneer.  The top of the head, the back, and the toe are essentially formed with triangle shapes.   The Back of the head was stamped "Pat Pend" and the sole is stamped "Special" one letter at a time. Words stamped one letter at a time on a club are usually the hallmark of a fake club. This club, however, is old and genuine. Also stamped on the sole—with the swing of a single hammer—is an elaborate trademark: "King Putter" with crossed clubs a ball and a crown.  This stamp, however, is not the work of a modern forger—nor is head.  The construction, style, patina, and craftsmanship of the aluminum head itself, which has been beautifully cast and not made in a garage somewhere, fits perfectly to the early 20th century as does the shaft and original grip.

Inasmuch as this is the only example of this putter seen by the auctioneer, the likely scenario for the words Pat Pend and Special being stamped one letter at a time is this: the maker was very small and did not think to obtain (or want to spend the extra money) a "Pat Pend" or "Special" stamp.  Or possibly the maker decided to try for a patent after making a few putters.  At any rate, this is a unique and stylish club.
