Made by the Baylis Mfg Co., the club offered here is the very club photographed and described in TCA2, V2 page 655.  Marked "Baylis" on the crown and "made in New England" on the sole, this driver has a solid steel core that runs the full length of the shaft.  This steel core, shaped in cross section like a six-pointed star, has been grooved out to receive six lengths of bamboo to form the shaft's outer diameter.  The first three images shows the steel protruding out of the sole and again at the top of the shaft.

The outside of the shaft is stamped "The 'Morgan' Shaft" and was covered under a 1929 British Patent issued to Robert Morgan of West Hartford, Ct.  The thought was to combine the best of both the wood shaft and steel shaft worlds into a single shaft. The club was not a success—few remain. But it does contain an amazing bit of creativity and engineering.

A signed copy of the TCA2 page showing this club will be included with this lot.
