The only mark on the back of this putter is William Gibson's Star cleekmark.  One of the two screws that hold the brass face in place intersects a portion of the star.  Because the last thing a clubmaker did to finish their work was to stamp the head, we know this brass face was added after the club was made (a clubmaker would never place a portion of their stamp on top of a screw when there was so much other space available for the stamp).  Also, the entire tips of the screws are not finished flush to the head as they would have been had the plate been installed before the club was finished.

Judging from the nature of the screws and the brass plate itself, the auctioneer believes the plate was installed during the early life of this club.

It is highly possible that this club was reshafted so the player could use the highly unusual grip on this shaft.  The grip consists of a rubber sleeve that was slid over the under listing and then heated to shrink it into place—or at least I believe that was the process for this club. The literature of the game 120 or so years ago includes a few accounts of how that was tried.

Overall this interesting, attractive club has some unique features and was likely the pet of an early club jockey.
