The metalwoods produced under the Honorable Reginald Thomas Dudley Brougham;s British Patent dated Feb. 3, 1894 were the first to receive significant market exposure.  The wood face in an aluminum head offered the golfer the feel of wood when contacting the ball with the durability of metal, which surrounded the wood.  Should the wood block become damaged, the golfer could remove a screw in the sole and in the back of the head and replace the wood block.

This particular Brogham metalwood is in average condition.  It has been used, but not abused.  It still looks good.  "Brougham Patent" is stamped on the top of the head, and "2" is tamped on the back of the head.  I believe this is among the earliest clubs ever identified as a 2 Wood. The face has more loft than a driver and the original shaft is 42 inches long—1 inch shorter than what is often found on drivers made in the 1890s.

The block in the face of this club is not scratched down its center.  It appears to simply be creased or scored, both vertically as well as (lightly) horizontally. The intersection of these scored lines marks the center of the head.  The butt end of the grip is a little loose and it could be original or a period replacement. Would be relatively easy to tighten it up once and for all if desired.  Brougham metalwoods are not often seen.  They show how clubmakers back in the 1890s had the right idea in coming up with metal woods, but they lacked the technology to make it work.
