Combination clubs, with heads made from two entirely different materials, are some of the most attractive golf clubs made.  At some point during 1980s, someone located a small box of Tyler combination clubheads, and they quickly made their way onto the collectibles market.  Some of the better heads were shafted and sold. This is one of those heads and it has never hit a ball. The shaft installed is an old shaft with its original leather wrap grip. Consequently, these items match up well to the clubhead.

Tyler's club offered here was covered under a 1925 US Patent.  The aluminum hosel and "web/brace" that extends out from the hosel was used to help secure the wood to the aluminum soleplate. Three screws that start at the back of the brace extend through it and into the wood on the front of the head.  You can actually see the tip of one of these screws in the heel of the face right next to the small hole on the heel side of the face.

This hole and a small bit of wood filler on the toe of the face are original to this club. (It is highly likely that the small hole was also originally patched with wood filler.  It appears that the clubmaker encroached on the tips of two additional screws when lofting the face of this club.  These other 2 screws extend up into the wood from the front of the soleplate.  This was all the work of the original clubmaker, quite possibly Tyler himself, as nobody has touched this face since it was originally made.
