Backspin irons came in a variety of formats. Most had deep corrugated or ribbed grooves laid out in various patterns. This particular iron, however, has a distinctly concave face with deep pronounced dots punched into the bottom half of the face. This is how the club was originally made. The back of the head is clearly marked "Bakspin Mashie Niblick, Dayton, Ohio" etc. The club is quite heavy, and the shaft is stamped "Made by the Crawford, Macgregor, and Canby Company, Dayton, Ohio." Original grip. As backspin irons go, this one is a rare bird.
