The top of the head and the shaft are stamped with the owner's initials "RAD."  The club is either a circa 1875 wooden niblick or a circa 1890 transitional. Because the dimension of the two clubs can be quite similar it is difficult to say for sure which it is.  However, the shape of this head is very much like a miniature long nose which is what a genuine wooden niblick typically looks like. Plus this club has two lead buttons on the sole as well as a large lead backweight. All this weight in a compact head allowed the club to extract a ball from a difficult grassy lie, which was the purpose of a wooden niblick.

The club is all original, with a varnished leather wrap grip.  There is a small crack in the head that extends out 3/8" from the lead backweight close to the toe. It has no real effect on the presentation of this little-used club. The crack most likely occurred when the hot lead was poured into the cavity.
