For centuries, splice neck joints were the territory of wood head clubs, and wood head clubs only.  That ended in 1910 when Frank Murray received a British patent for his splice neck iron, which now stands as the only iron made with a splice neck joint in the history of the game.

The Murry splice neck iron offered here is a 40-inch-long cleek in overall great condition.

In the accompanying images the viewer can see the tip of the shaft low on the back side of the hosel, and the tip of the hosel well up on the back side of the shaft.  According to the patent, the hosel could be made with a series of serrations in order to help the glue bind the head to the shaft. Because the splice on this iron is not entirely enclosed by whipping, some of these serrations are visible.

Another point about this splice neck on this iron is that it is actually a bead splice.  The flat side of the shaft has an elevated "bead of wood" that fits into a corresponding opening inside the back of the hosel.  The patent refers to it as a strip of wood that is inserted into a groove on the back of the hosel.

The shaft is original to this club, but the neck whipping is not. It looks much like the original whipping and has been installed in two sections to highlight the splice joint.  If a club is blessed with the only such joint in the world, a little visibility is a great thing!
