Advanced Golf by James Braid 1st  U.S. Edition 1908 Philadelphia: George W . Jacobs & Co., with 88 photographs and diagrams, including frontispiece with tissue-guard, hard cover book, cloth, 322 pages. Excellent Condition.

As one of the Great Triumvirate alongside Harry Vardon and J.H. Taylor, James Braid won the British Open five times between 1901 and 1910 to go with his many other titles. He would later become one of the finest course architects in the game.

Born in Earlsferry, Scotland, he took up golf at an early age and played on the links at Elie. A carpenter by trade, Braid turned his skilled hands to making and repairing clubs before leaving Scotland to work as a club maker in a shop in London. At 26, he struck out on his own when he accepted a job as the professional at Romford Golf Club on the outskirts of London.

He helped establish the British Professional Golfers' Association and, in the midst of his success, moved to Walton Heath to the south of London, where he remained the pro for more than 40 years until his death in 1950.

While at Walton Heath, Braid found time to both write about golf and design or improve more than 200 courses throughout the U.K., such as Gleneagles, Carnoustie, Southport and Ainsdale,

He first articulated his philosophy in this book which was initially published in 1902 in London. Two chapters are devoted to design and are quaintly entitled "The Planning of Course" and "The Character and Placing of Teeing Grounds, Bunkers and Putting Greens."

Advanced Goif is one of the great instruction books detailing how golf was played by one of the games greatest champions.
