Golf a Royal and Ancient Game by Robert Clark 1st trade Edition 1875, Edinburgh, Scotland: R&R Clark.  Owners name “Donald M. Donald” in ink on page 1.  Original green cloth cover with beautifully rebound leather spine and corners with gilt etching. Gilded page tops. Deckled edges.  With plates from paintings, engravings, etchings and frontispiece, with tissue-guards; plus, numerous wood engravings throughout the text; title page with decorative gilt margins.  In near fine condition.

According to Donovan and Jerris 2006, "Widely regarded as one of the most significant, as well as best produced, early books on the history of golf, Clark’s work is a compilation of the earliest literature on the game.  In assembling the book, Clark, a well-known Edinburgh printer, collected early press reports, biographical sketches, significant acts of Parliament, municipal records, diaries, and extras from the minutes of the earliest golf clubs. The book also contains obituaries of two the game’s earliest champion, Alan Robertson and Tom Morris, Jr."

This is a beautifully rebound copy of this giant work in the literature of golf.
