In 1897 George Smith applied for a British patent to cover the unique
neck shape found on this anti-shank iron. He never bothered to complete
his patent, but that apparently did not stop him from collecting
royalties. Many clubs having his neck design were produced by various
makers and marked with Smith's name or "Smith's Model".
This example is a beautiful "D Anderson & Sons" Smith-neck anti-shank mashie made in St. Andrews sometime in the early 1900s. "D. Anderson & Sons" consisted of clubmaker David Anderson and his five sons. They primarily made woods, but would also fashion irons using other cleekmaker's heads and their own turned shafts. This club was sold by the Fortnum and Mason department store in Piccadilly, London, which is still in business today--over three hundred years since it's founding!
Original shaft measures 36" long, with original leather wrap grip.
Condition is as shown in photographs.
