The unique molded grips on these two irons appear to be made in keeping with Maxwell Robert Cauch-kavanagh's Sept 19, 1896 British patent.  HIs patent called for mixing gutta percha with cork sawdust in a 4 to 1 ratio by weight.  According to the patent, after the gutta grip "was firmly jammed on the shaft, next a wrapping of strong cotton is wound tight round the gutta to form an envelope. The handle was immersed in boiling water and when the composition becomes plastic the handle is grasped by the person for whom the club is made, and the desired impression formed on it. The handle is then inserted in cold water, and the wrapping removed, and the club completed.

The shiny Rustless iron is "Alex Herd's Own" made by Winton, and the other iron is simply stamped with two initials "A H" The fact that both clubs were found together bearing these grips, that both clubs are different, and that the one club is Alex Herd's Own and the other is marked with Alex Herd's initials "A H".... allows at least the rumination that maybe Herd once owned these clubs?  The grip moldings match in their size, etc.
