The Gist of Golf by Harry Vardon 1st Edition 1922, New York: George H. Doran Company, cloth, 153 pages. Illustrated from photographs posed by Harry Vardon, including six three-page-fold-outs that show (on the front and back of the pages) six positions in his swing sequence for six different clubs, from driver to putter. Outstanding condition.

Born in 1870, Harry Vardon is a giant character in the history of the game. He won 62 professional titles and seven majors (the 1900 US Open, and 1896, 1898, 1899, 1903, 1911 and 1914 British Opens). Today, the scoring leaders on both the European and US Tours receive the Harry Vardon Trophy.

He popularized the “Vardon Grip” and his instruction books are still relevant.

Vardon took up the game in his teens and turned professional at 20, in 1890. His first major win was in the 1896 British Open, where he played in what would become his signature attire: knickers (he was the first golfer to do so), dress shirt, tie and buttoned jacket.

In 1900 he traveled to America and played more than 80 exhibition matches - often against the better-ball of two opponents – and won 70 of them. He also won the US Open that year. Twenty years later, at age 50 he finished second in the same event.

After leaving tournament golf Vardon kept busy designing courses and writing instruction books. The one offered here – “The Gist of Golf” – is considered a classic.
