Stamped in an oval on the back of the head "A. Tingey, Brancaster, Norfolk'" this is an outstanding rut niblick made early in the 1890s, when Tingey worked at Royal West Norfolk (1892—1899).  Measuring 4 3/4" in length and 13/16" in thickness, this hosel is larger than what was typically made during the early 1890s. In addition, this head is smaller than what is typically found on an early 1890s rut niblick. Plus it has a nice curve along the leading edge. The top line is also nice and thick on this heavy club.

This club is one of the earliest to be marked with its makers information inside an oval on the back of the head.  It was during the early 1890s that makers information inside an oval took root in the world of clubmaking. Not long thereafter it became the standard.

The shaft is original and its leather-wrapped grip is a period replacement that matches up well.  Overall this stout rut niblick is a fine piece!

The golf ball in some of the images is not included with this lot.
