With all due respect to Tiger Woods and his stunning victory at the 2019 Masters, many still regard Jack Nicklaus’ final major victory at the 1986 Masters as the most amazing performance in that tournament’s history.

Forever associated with his win was the putter he used - a MacGregor Response MI 615. The initial production run consisted of approximately 200 heads which can be identified by the designer’s name, “DC Long” on the sole. During the manufacturing process, it was discovered that the polishing heat affected the epoxy used to adhere the brass cover disks on the sole of the putters, causing some of them to fall off - resulting in a modification of how the heads were made. The solution was to countersink a sole plate screw through the brass disk and into the lead weight below it. This change effected the last 25 or so examples made with the DC Long stamp, and continued into all the later versions that were offered.

According to the designer Clay (DC) Long, Nicklaus’ putter was from that small final group. An interesting post script, that particular putter—which was painted black—has gone missing and it’s whereabouts remain unknown to this day.

The 35 1/2" Response MI615 putter offered here is also from that very small group with the DC Long stamp and the sole screws. While not pristine, the club is completely original with the soft aluminum head showing normal wear and some marks from regular use. Bottom line - this is as close as one can get to owning the exact putter model the Golden Bear made history with some 34 years ago. A must for the serious collector of Nicklaus and Masters memorabilia.
