Designed to impart backspin to the ball, this club has deep, horizontal grooves running across the face.
The fact that this club—"The Hutch"—was endorsed by Jack "Jock" Hutchison is great history. It was Jock Hutchson who helped bring about the demise of the backspin iron. His effective use of a backspin iron while winning the 1921 British Open created no small stir. Shortly thereafter, the R&A banned such clubs while the USGA postponed taking any action. By 1924 the USGA finally ruled against backspin irons and consequently the companies making deep groove clubs quit doing so. The backspin iron itself then drew back and disappeared. TCA2 v1 p275
