Don't let the intricate golf details deceive you, this box is not only quite beautiful but also extremely heavy! Measuring 6 1/2" long 3 1/2" wide, and almost 2" tall, this metal box was likely used to hold cigarettes, but could hold a variety of items, such as pens or jewelry or....

The inside of the base is lined with dark redish-brown bakelite inserts and the bottom section is partitioned into two sections. These pieces are loose by design but fit neatly together when placed in position. They can be removed and safely stored if desired.  The large piece of bakelite inside the lid is mounted with four tiny screws.

Jennings Brothers opened a metal foundry in the late 1800's in Connecticut. They hired many sculptors and artists to helpe create metal works of art in a variety of forms--boxes being one of them. After going out of business in the 1950's, another company bought the molds and continued to make pieces, but not near to the quality and craftmanship of the originals. An original Jennings Brother piece can be identified by the "JB" stamp on the bottom, which this one has.

Bakelite was invented in 1907 and patented in 1909.

Condition as shown in photographs.
