Stamped only "R. Forgan" on the top of this head, this club was most likely made between January of 1901, after Prince Edward became King Edward VII, and early 1902, when Forgan was appointed Golf Club Maker to His Majesty King Edward VII.  We know this because this club does not bear the prince of Wales plume, which Forgan stopped using one the Prince became the King, nor does it bear the King's crown stamp, with which Forgan marked his clubs once he was appointed clubmaker to the King. It is possible that the club was made years later, after the reign of King Edward VII, but the characteristics of this club fit the early 1900s quite well.

 

The shaft 34" original shaft is stamped "R. Forgan & Son. The grip has been redone, but matches up well to the club. The club still has its original finish and is still in solid condition.

 

The slip on the sole uses 3 screws instead of wood dowels. This was a new feature tried on occasion in the early 1900s, but the early 1900s was not the first time metal was used to fasten the slip to the sole.  Many decades earlier, an obscure 19th century clubmaker who marked his clubs "Bruce" sometimes used pegs made from iron, not wood.
