The stamp on the back of this c. 1900 niblick, consisting of very small letters, reads "B. Sayers / North Berwick / Warranted Handforged."  Its a very nice example of a Ben Sayer's club as well as a circa 1900 smooth face niblick.

As a youth, Ben Sayers spent his time training to be an acrobat, but after playing his first round of golf at the age of 16, he fell in love with the game. He quickly became a competitive golf professional, a popular and skilled instructor, and also a clubmaker. Starting with long nose clubs in the 1880's, he continued to make clubs in the 1890s and well into the 20th century.  He is responsible for a number of club designs such as the stop-um deep groove backspin iron, dreadnaught driver, and the jumbo driver.  He remains one of the great personalities of late 19th-early 20th century golf.

This club has been re-gripped with a period-style sheepskin grip, and it's shaft measures 35 1/2" long.

Condition is as shown in photographs.
