The face on this Crawford, McGregor & Canby mallet putter is inlaid
with lead, to provide the golfer's putts with a soft feel. The front of
the shaft facing the toe is flat down its entire length, from the top
of the grip to the top of the hosel. This flat front side corresponds
exactly with the flat front on the hosel which continues on to form a
matching flat top line. This club was used very little and remains in
outstanding original condition.
John Youds of the UK patented the lead face putter in 1908. Both Spalding and MacGregor produced lead face putters. The added weight of the lead in the head gave these clubs a feeling of substance, plus they rolled the ball well. The lead on the face of the putter offere here is exceptionally clean, with nothing but the most minor of marks. Because lead is so soft, most lead face putters shows quite a few dents and dings in the lead. A fine club with attractive features!
