This unusual driver does not have a neck. Instead the back of the head is open to create a tongue and groove relation ship with the shaft, as can be seen in the images. There is also a wood dowel in the face that extends through the tongue of the shaft, to help secure it in place. There is also another dowel? that is covered over on the front and back of the head right near the exposed portion of the back of the shaft. This dowel also helps to secure the shaft in place. To further help hold the shaft in position, the top of the shaft is flared out where it contacts the top of the head.
The top of the head is stamped "W. Crowley / No. 263,086". This British design registration number dates to the end of 1895, which makes this club one of the earliest to possess a unique neck joint, one that was neither a splice nor a round socket.
Overall, this club is in excellent condition with its original finish, shaft and grip.
