This backspin iron has corrugated grooves and a slight gooseneck (offset) built into the neck, something that is not commonly seen in an antique golf club. Off-set helps the golfer draw the ball and clubmakers today often employ offset in many of their iron designs.

This iron was made sometime in the early 1920s by George Nicoll of Leven, Scotland. Nichol started his club-making business in 1881 and used slight variations of an upturned hand for his mark across his entire career. The back of this iron bears his hand cleekmark, along with his name and location. It is also stamped "Warranted / Handforged" and "Zenith / Mashie" along with "Elphick," most likely the name of a former owner.

Around the turn of the century, George's son stepped up in the family business and helped model it after other leading club manufacturers like Spalding--producing complete lines of irons, of which Zenith was one of the most popular.

Shaft measures 37" and retains its original leather-wrap grip.
