When I laid my eyes on this putter when it was still in its shipping box, before I took it out I immediately questioned if this was a home-made club of some type. When I pulled the club out of the box, I was left speechless. I have never seen anything like this putter.  It is sooooo unusual.  Upon inspecting the club, its clear that the club is completely legitimate. I estimate that it dates somewhere around 1900-1910.

The head is cast from brass. The makers name is cast into the back of the head " 'Allen' of Chicago, USA".  The shaft is exceptionally thick, to match the exceptionally thick hosel, and it has its original leather wrap grip.  The front of the head is slightly recessed into the hosel so a bronze insert that forms the face could be attached flush to the head.  The bronze insert was likely used because bronze is harder than brass. A bronze face will not ding or dent nearly as easily as brass.  The entire head, except for the face insert, was painted gray, which I believe to be original to the club, done so the club would look like it had an iron head.  The gray paint has worn off in places, but the club is still quite handsome.

I coined the name "Pick Axe putter" given the obvious resemblance this club has to such a tool. Plus, when you take hold of this club you realize that the solid brass clubhead is exceptionally heavy.  The rocker sole on this club works well for a right-handed golfer, as it allows for a variety of lies.  One final point.  The putter is so well made and balanced, that it will stand up on its own in perfect position to address a ball when placed on a solid, flat surface.
